International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th every year. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day is also the focus of the campaign for women’s rights and gender parity.

Inspired by the women of the World we have created a wonderful collection of rose gifts to mark this special day.

International Women's Day (IWD) has been celebrated for over one hundred years. The first IWD gathering took place in 1911 and was supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Before this the Socialist Party of America, United Kingdom's Suffragettes, and further groups campaigned for women's equality.

The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in the International Women's Year, 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8th as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.

Since 1996 the UN has announced themes for IWD. Here are some of the more recent:

  • 2012 - Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty
  • 2013 - A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women
  • 2014 - Equality for Women is Progress for All
  • 2015 - Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!
  • 2016 - Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality
  • 2017 - Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030
  • 2018 - Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives

In 2019 the theme is:  Think equal, build smart, innovate for change

There is an IWD web site www.internationalwomensday.com, which also has an annual campaign theme which provides the focus and direction for IWD activities. This includes not only a celebration of women but also a clarion call for gender parity. In 2019 the site’s theme is #BalanceforBetter - Better the balance, better the worl

Don’t forget to visit our beautiful collection of rose gifts to celebrate this important day.
